Hello! My name is Julie S. and this is an informative blog on how to host a field day. This past year I hosted a field day at my school for my Girl Scout Gold Award. This project required many hours and planning to ensure complete success.
My Girl Scout Gold Award was a project called "Field Day for Pathways". I was inspired to carry through with my project because of my own personal experiences. Two summers ago I volunteered at a summer camp called Camp Sunshine in Ridgewood, NJ. This camp is tailored for children and young adults with multiple disabilities. Volunteering at this camp inspired me to take action in my own community and tailor activities for children with special disabilities. Pathways is a program in my school that is designed for children with disabilities. Trained mentors attend monthly meetings to play games and do other activities with the children. Having been a member of this club for over two years, I thought that I should intertwine my Gold Award and Pathways to make this a both memorable and personal experience. In order to host my own field day I needed to do research on how to host one. This included talking to gym teachers and searching on the internet to see what I could find. I have provided my own step by step instructions as to how to set up a successful field day.
Step 1: Create a table of contents that provides information and serves as a checklist of the things you must accomplish
Step 3: Provide dates, times and a location as to when and where your event will take place
Step 4: Create a flier that presents the information to the event. Distribute this flier to parents and guardians
Step 5: Create a sample letter to provide information to the parents and guardians of the children that will attend the event
Step 6: Create a detailed schedule that outlines how long you will spend performing the activities you choose to perform
Step 7: Create an outline as to what each activity is. Provide the necessary equipment and instructions on how to play.
Step 8: Provide extra activities just in case your prioritized activities do not go according to plan
Step 9: Determine where you will get/borrow your equipment from
Step 10: Provide a layout as to how you will set up your events
Step 11: If you are planning an outdoor field day, provide a back up plan in case of inclement weather
Step 12: Provide a list of snacks and drinks that you will provide. I suggest healthy snacks and drinks as a field day supports the ideas of health and fitness!
Hopefully this guide will ensure a field day that will be super successful! Please let me know if you have any other questions, concerns, or comments.
Thanks!
Julie
